I had a vague idea what sand-yachting might be – a kind of go-cart with a big sail – but when watching a skilled proponent on a sun-kissed beach zooming around at high speed, it becomes close to an art form. The thrill, I am told, is doing “wheelies”, taking a corner at speed, but for that, a good following wind is the vital, necessary ingredient. The next windy day then, if you are on the Ile de Ré in Poitou-Charentes, France, head for CNPA Ile de Ré on La Flotte en Ré-Rivedoux-Plage and feel the wind in your hair! www.iledere-voile.com. Other watersports are available too. Full tuition and guidance given.
