It’s always good to wander around a fine hotel, I find, as there are often forgotten surprises, just waiting to be re-discovered nearby. So it is the case with The Savoy London, managed by Fairmont Hotels & Resorts.
Victoria Embankment Gardens, situated between Hungerford and Waterloo Bridges and forming part of The Thames Embankment, backs onto The River Entrance of the hotel and it is just bursting with statues of Victorian heroes and heroines. My favourite has to be Sir William Goscombe’s tribute to Sir Arthur Sullivan (1842 – 1900), famous for his operattas produced in collaboration with W.S. Gilbert. With the lady draped around the statue’s base, it is both very unusual in composition and is a true lament to the passing of this acclaimed musician. Sir William produced another statue of Sir Arthur which is now in St Paul’s Cathedral, London.
The Savoy, of course, was built by the impressario who made his name producing Gilbert and Sullivan operettas – Sir Richard D’Oyly Carte – and the property’s meetings rooms are named after the productions – Mikado Room, Pinafore Room, Gondoliers Room etc. Sir Richard also built the Palace Theatre, London, too.
The other side of the garden and you are presented with two of the most interesting of London’s attractions – the popular London Eye – and an ancient obelisk, popularly known as Cleopatra’s Needle but dating back a thousand years before. Originally from Heliopolis, it was created in the reign of Pharaoh Thutmose III and was presented to the UK by Egypt’s ruler Muhammad Ali in 1819. It was finally erected on Victoria Embankment on 12th September 1878. It commemorates the naval victories of Lord Nelson and Sir Ralph Abercromby. You can view its twin apparently in New York City’s Central Park where it has been since 1881.
