Five of the best… Sweet hangouts in Newport Beach

For edition five of Magellan PR’s Five of the Best series, we are visiting Visit Newport Beach, California, USA, as they know all the sweetest places to be!

The one and only Balboa Bar is a unique refreshing treat from Balboa Island. The Balboa bar is a rich slab of vanilla ice cream on a lollipop stick covered in thick dark chocolate then rolled in nuts or hundreds and thousands. These irresistible confections can be found at Dad’s Donuts or Sugar n’ Spice on Balboa Island and at the Balboa Fun Zone .

No trip to Newport Beach would be complete without trying this strangely tasty and all American sweetie, Salt Water Taffy. These chewy little sweets come in hundreds of different flavours – watermelon, peppermint, chilli, mango etc so your selection may take a while! Have a go at making your own at Balboa Taffy using an old fashion Taffy Pull.

Newport Beach truly is a Dentist’s Heaven, with sweets and treats on every corner. Located just three blocks from the sand, Lollishop doesn’t let Newport down, with a whole host of sweet treats for even the most discerning of sweet toothed costumers. Lollishop really is the place for “candy, candy, candy and novelty ice cream”.

When the President of the United States of America comes to town there is nothing he likes more than heading to the Wonderland Bakery and ordering his favourite batch of Presidential cookies. You don’t need to be the leader of the free world to indulge in these wonderfully decorated if a little eccentric cookies and cakes.  The bakery is Newport Beach’s Sweet Ambassador and creates the official cupcake, cake and cookie for local and visitors. Guests can even decorate a cookie or cupcake.

Balboa has more than one sweet claim to chocolatey fame. If the Balboa Bar dose not grab your fancy then why not try the frozen banana – a frozen banana, dipped in chocolate and covered in hundreds & thousands or chopped nuts.  According to Wikipedia, locals believe Balboa Island is where the frozen chocolate banana was first marketed and indeed, this story is referenced in the American television show Arrested Development in which the wealthy Bluth family of Orange County owns a frozen chocolate banana stand on Balboa Island.
