When searching within Fairmont Hotel & Resort’s image bank the other day, I came across a rather unique photograph dating back to 1947 of Bing Crosby at The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge in Canada’s Rocky Mountains.
I thought it might make the basis for an interesting little photo essay series of this and other vintage shots from our clients’ illustrious pasts, so Bing (master crooner) is the subject of the first example of the genre. What was he doing at Jasper and why was he playing golf with a bear?
Well, although there is an interesting blog post here from The Bing Crosby News Archive about his stay at The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, we can only hazard a guess as to what was going on. Alicia Chelsom, PR of the property, says Bing first came to the Lodge around 1947 when the lodge opened up after WWII. Paramount Pictures was making a film called The Emperor Waltz starring Bing Crosby and they had taken over the Lodge before the paying punters came in.
We assume that he posed for a photograph to record the win with the neighbourhood bear. Alicia continues: “Near our laundry building toward Gardeners Cabin there are bleachers that still stand, and back in the early to mid 1900’s it was a viewing area to watch the bears that would frequent the grounds. As Bing visited during 1947 when the Lodge was a summer-only resort, it was common to see animals roaming free”.
