Hanging around at Viceroy Riviera Maya!

One of the best loved pieces of “furniture” at Viceroy Riviera Maya is the locally made hammocks which hang in the secluded jungle gardens of each of the resort’s 41 villas, perfect for that discreet “siesta”.

These hand-crocheted hammocks (available in different colours) are bought in from the local Mayan community and so popular are they with guests wanting to take home a unique memento of their visit, they are now the number one sales item in the boutique, priced at just GBP50 (*USD80).

Mexican hammocks are among the most traditional kind of hammock you can find.  They are made with hundreds of woven cotton strings that give you a feeling of floating on air.   They are said to have been among the first pieces of furniture to be moved off the floor, allowing the person sleeping to keep out of the way of snakes and other creepy crawlies that pose threats to human beings.  Their history dates back as far as 3,000 years ago and are attributed to the Mayan civilization for use as portable beds.  Made with over a mile of cotton thread, these hammocks (with all their tiny holes) allow greater ventilation than a bed or a sun lounger, allowing you to stay cooler.

And to answer that age-old question – how do I get in and out?  Carefully is the answer!  The golden rule whenever you hang your hammock for the first time is to test that everything is safe and secure by slowly sitting on your closed hammock and testing that it’s secure by gently bouncing on it.  Only when you know everything is OK should you lie down on it by opening it out and sitting down carefully in the centre before turning around and lifting your feet in.  To get out, put your feet on the ground, sit up and then stand up.
