You can, of course, start the day in your private villa at Viceroy Riviera Maya, surrounded by lush jungle vegetation, sharing your space with any number of friendly little animals & birds coming to call. On occasion however it is fun to eat with your friends looking out over the Caribbean Sea, with a soundtrack of waves to serenade you – and this is what you might expect from the resort’s Coral Grill & Bar.
Not just any fruit plate – this is “THE” fruit plate. This colossal “fruitfest” has completely spoilt me for fruit salads in other part of the world. Wash it all down with one of the healthy smoothies created by the Viceroy team – delicious but despite having the recipe, impossible to recreate at home.
By being so good in choosing a fruit plate, the waiters slip in a locally made Conchas Blancas (White Shell), a kind of sweet bread or brioche which simply melts in your mouth. Calorie free I’m told … hmmm. These sweet pastries – collectively known as Pan Dulce – apparently are a legacy of the French dating back to the early 1800’s. The French have long since departed but they left an abiding love of all things doughy … and the inventive Mexicans have adapted the recipes to suit the local palate.
And this little marvel – Pan de Muerto – came hurtling towards me, unbidden too. Another of those fat and calorie free pastries that it would be churlish to resist!
