Ride the Bastille Bubbles to the top of the world!

Ride the famous ‘Bubbles’ high above the historic city centre of Grenoble and arrive at the Bastille, in just a few glorious sight-seeing minutes with the famous Bastille Cable Car.

Bastille Cable Car
Built in 1591 by the Duke of Lesdiguières, the Bastille fort was entirely reconstructed from 1823 to 1848 to protect the city from any possible attacks by the Savoy Dukedom, coming over the Chartreuse mountains. Located at the crossroad of three valleys, this remarkably well-preserved fortification features ramparts, blockhouses and steps, rising to almost 300 metres. For more than 2,000 years, the site has been an integral part of the city, from its days of protection to the popular tourist site it is today. Even though the fort was rebuilt in 1823, a turret and wall of the original Lesdiguières building from the 16th century has been preserved.

Bastille Cable Car

In 1934, a tourist cable car was built on the slopes of the Bastille, one of the first urban cable cars in the world, the Bastille Cable Car proceeded the well-known Cape Town and Rio de Janeiro cable cars. The famous ‘bubbles’, designed in 1976, lift you high above the historic city centre to the Bastille Fort, where visitors can enjoy the Museum, the spectacular views and also the beautiful wildlife. As a south-facing mountain, the area is home to a great variety of birds and insects and is classified as an area of ecological and wildlife interest.

Since opening in 1934 more than 14 million people have travelled up the mountain, with an average of 260,000 visitors per year!
