The Flapper Age is upon us!

The Plaza

With the opening of The Great Gatsby this May, where else should we turn for a bit of roaring twenties action than to  The Plaza, New York?  On 10th May 2013, just days before the much-anticipated film opens in the UK starring Leonardo DiCaprio, the property will unveil their “Fitzgerald Suite” to commemorate the much-lauded author.

Inspired by Baz Luhrmann’s interpretation of “The Great Gatsby” and envisioned by Oscar-winning production designer Catherine Martin, the 900-square-foot suite on the 18th floor of The Plaza acts as a dramatic art deco space channeling the dynamism of the Jazz Age with authentic, period-inspired pieces from luxury home furnishings brand, RH (Restoration Hardware).

For any would-be authors, inspired to follow in Fitzgerald’s wake, notepads and pens lie at the ready in case inspiration strikes ….

… To complete the cycle, at The Plaza’s renowned Palm Court restaurant, there is even a Fitzgerald Afternoon Tea (USD60/GBP40 per person) which echoes the tastes and flavours from the flapper era…

Closer to home here at The Savoy, London The Great Gatsby cocktail has been created by Head Barman Erik Lorincz of The American Bar.  Mix a little Bombay Sapphire, Apricot Liqueur, Carroway Seeds, Lime Sugar Syrup, more sugar to sweeten to taste and top it off with champagne.  Works for me, Mr Lorincz.

And is it just me, or doesn’t the new Kaspar’s Seafood Bar & Grill opening 2nd May 2013 at The Savoy just perfectly epitomise the Jazz Age era?  Seems like the decades are re-aligning … we think Jay would feel right at home.

Accommodation for two in The Fitzgerald Suite starts from USD2,795 + tax (GBP1,800*) and includes: Moët Imperial Gatsby cocktails for two in The Rose Club, breakfast for two in The Palm Court or through In-Room Dining and a bottle of Moët champagne upon arrival. Terms and conditions apply *rate correct at time of conversion.
